Department of Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the branch of medicine and biology concerned with the study of drug action & scientific study of the origin, nature, chemistry, effects and uses of drugs. More specifically, it is the study of the interactions that occur between a living organism and chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function i.e. it deals with how drugs interact within biological systems to affect the function. If substances have medicinal properties, they are considered pharmaceuticals. The field encompasses drug composition and properties, interactions, toxicology, therapy, and medical applications and antipathogenic capabilities. The two main areas of pharmacology are: Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics.

Pharmacology is all about “finding out how drugs work”. It is concerned with the effects of drugs on living organisms and their components such as cells, membranes, organelles, enzymes and DNA. Pharmacology affects us all, almost every day.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To perform the study of practical aspects of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology.
  2. Screening of drugs by using different validated experimental animal models.
  3. To study major drug classes and prototype drugs with their Pharmacological actions, mechanism of actions, adverse effects, uses contraindications.
  4. To perform In-vivo and In-vitro experiments on animals and their isolated tissues.
  5. To perform various research activities of crude drugs/synthetic drug for its pharmacological evaluation.

SCOPE OF PHARMACOLOGY

  • The department caters to the needs of DPharm & BPharm students.
  • It is a well-equipped department, with adequate infrastructure for diploma and graduate programmes.
  • The students are trained in both theory and practical aspects so as to carve into a good Pharmacologist.
  • The excellent infrastructure facility along with exposure to latest digital screening instruments builds up commendable hand skills in the students.
  • A career in pharmacology, full of opportunities leading to a golden future for a young career aspirant.
  • Clinical Trials, Pharmacovigilance, Clinical pharmacist, Bio-equivalence studies, Toxicological Studies, Medical transcription and Medical coding:
  • These are some of the areas of clinical research which are in high demand as they are involved in the systematic evaluation of potential drug substances prior to getting them approved by the authorities. In these job opportunities, working conditions, job satisfaction and monetary benefits are excellent.
